Overview
SPC flooring is renowned for its straightforward installation process. Its rigid core and precision click-lock system make it one of the most installer-friendly flooring products on the market, significantly reducing labor time and costs compared to glue-down or nail-down alternatives.
Tools Required
Before beginning installation, gather the necessary tools.
- Tape measure and chalk line
- Spirit level
- Utility knife or fine-tooth pull saw / miter saw
- Tapping block and pull bar
- Rubber mallet
- Spacers (for expansion gap)
Step 1: Subfloor Preparation
The subfloor must be clean, flat, and dry. SPC can bridge minor imperfections, but any high spots or low spots greater than 3mm over a 1.8-meter span should be corrected with a floor leveling compound. Remove all existing baseboards and door casings.
Step 2: Acclimation
Unlike hardwood or laminate, SPC flooring requires minimal or no acclimation time. However, it is good practice to store the boxes in the installation room for 24 hours to allow the planks to reach room temperature before installation, particularly in cold climates.
Step 3: Plan the Layout
Measure the room and plan the layout to ensure the first and last rows are of similar width (ideally more than half a plank width). Snap a chalk line as a reference guide. Determine the direction of the planks — running parallel to the longest wall or the primary light source generally looks best.
Step 4: Install the Planks
Begin in a corner, placing spacers against the wall to maintain the required expansion gap (typically 8-10mm). Angle the tongue of the first plank into the groove of the second and press down to engage the click-lock. Use a tapping block and rubber mallet to ensure tight joints. Stagger end joints between rows by at least 300mm for structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
Step 5: Finishing
Once all planks are installed, remove the spacers and reinstall or install new baseboards and quarter-round molding to cover the expansion gap. Install transition strips at doorways and where the SPC meets other flooring types.
