SPC vs Vinyl Flooring: What's the Difference?

SPC vs Vinyl Flooring: What's the Difference?

Overview

In the resilient flooring market, Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) has long been a popular choice. However, Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) flooring has rapidly gained market share as the next generation of vinyl flooring. For distributors and contractors, understanding the distinct differences between SPC and traditional flexible vinyl (LVT) is crucial.

Core Composition: The Key Difference

The fundamental difference lies in the core layer of the plank. Traditional vinyl (LVT) uses a PVC and plasticizer core, making the plank soft, flexible, and pliable. SPC flooring uses a mixture of natural limestone powder, PVC resin, and stabilizers, creating an incredibly dense, rigid, and dimensionally stable core.

Dimensional Stability and Heat Resistance

Traditional vinyl is susceptible to expansion and contraction with temperature fluctuations. In areas with direct sunlight or high heat, LVT can warp, peak, or gap at the seams. The limestone core of SPC makes it exceptionally stable — it will not expand or contract significantly, even in environments with extreme temperature changes or direct sunlight. SPC is the superior choice for climate-volatile regions.

Subfloor Requirements

Flexible vinyl will conform to the shape of the subfloor, meaning any imperfections will eventually telegraph through to the surface. SPC's rigid core bridges minor subfloor imperfections, saving significant time and money on subfloor preparation during installation.

Durability and Impact Resistance

The soft core of LVT makes it susceptible to dents from heavy furniture or dropped objects. The stone-composite core of SPC is highly impact-resistant — much harder to dent than traditional LVT — making it ideal for high-traffic commercial spaces.

Conclusion

While traditional LVT remains a cost-effective option for light residential use, SPC flooring is the superior product for commercial applications, areas with temperature fluctuations, and projects where subfloor preparation needs to be minimized. Its rigid core technology offers unmatched durability and stability.
